Good evening,

Today, Ethereum developers confirmed the next four features slated for implementation in the Glamsterdam upgrade.

Below, I discuss why these four features were chosen ahead of ten other features considered for inclusion (CFI’d) in Glamsterdam and their expected impacts on Ethereum stakeholders.

Quick shout-out to Ethereum Cat Herders President Pooja Ranjan for her summary of today’s All Core Developers (ACD) meeting.

As you know, I’m looking to phase out the call summaries I write in these newsletters, since I expect there will be an increasing number of AI-generated and human-generated ones in the months and years ahead.

I’m currently evaluating alternative ACD call summaries to feature in my newsletter, and Pooja’s is a frontrunner that I may feature as a substitute for mine.

If you have any suggestions related to this or other aspects of the ACD After Hours newsletter, please share them by replying to this email or, if you’re a premium subscriber, by sending a message in the CDK subscriber Telegram chat.

Yours truly,

Christine D. Kim

🗒️ Call Minutes

(For background on the ACD process and jargon used on these calls, refer to the Ethereum Governance 101 document in the ACD Toolkit.)

Fusaka

  • No issues or concerns were reported on the blob parameter-only (BPO) hard fork activated on Ethereum mainnet last week.

  • Client teams are working on networking changes to support further increases to blob capacity.

  • Developers largely agreed that networking changes should be activated on mainnet and tested first before further increases to blob capacity are scheduled.

Glamsterdam

  • Block-level access lists (BAL) Devnet-1 has been running over the holidays.

  • Reth and Erigon clients have fallen out of sync with the devnet and need to be re-synced.

  • Testing also needs to be expanded on BAL Devnet-1.

  • Developers discussed four open pull requests (PRs) related to enshrined proposer builder specifications (ePBS).

  • Due to the technical nature of these PRs, developers agreed to discuss them off the call and allow more time for other call topics.

  • Developers also agreed to start implementation work on Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) 7778, 7708, 7843, and 8024 for inclusion in BAL Devnet-2.

  • Busa suggested aiming for Devnet-2 launch by January 21.

Block Gas Limit Increase

  • Nethermind developers Kamil Chodala and Marcin Sobczak are working on client optimizations and testing to evaluate the potential for an increase in the block gas limit.

Client Feedback Requests

  • Client feedback is requested on a new RPC testing endpoint for evaluating transaction inclusion in the block building process.

  • Client feedback is also requested on a new standard for JSON RPC error codes.

CFI → SFI

Until ACDT #65, it was unclear which EIPs would be prioritized for inclusion in the next major network-wide Ethereum upgrade, Glamsterdam, beyond the two headliner features, BALs and ePBS.

Based on ACDT #65, we can infer the next four features of Glamsterdam and their impacts on Ethereum stakeholders.
